KATHMANDU, Feb 18: Nepali boxing officials, who are converging in Kathmandu for its electoral general assembly on Saturday, are divided into two factions with current President Rabi Raj Thapa and General Secretary Rajiv Shrestha both announcing separate panels for the election.

When most of the sports associations are electing their executive committee unanimously, boxing is following democratic practice.[break]

Thapa has announced his candidacy for the post of president and his panel includes Ram Awale as a candidate for general secretary. According to Awale, Ganesh Bhattarai and Govinda Bhattarai are candidates for vice-presidents from their side.

“We are discussing about candidates for other posts as well. We’ll finalize all other names by tomorrow (Saturday) morning after discussing them with all general assembly members,” said Awale.

On the other hand, Shrestha panel includes Prachanda Sharma, the chief coach of boxing, as a candidate for general secretary. According to Sharma, Deepak Gurung and Dinesh Singh (Far-western Region) are candidates for vice-presidents from their panel. Sabin Bhattacharya (Hetauda) and Kiran Bahadur Shrestha (Kathmandu) are set to file their nominations for the posts of secretary and treasurer respectively from Shrestha panel. Gautam Sujakhu (Bhaktapur), Sanjiv Baidya (Kathmandu), Sangam Shah (Dang), Buddha Guvaju (Pokhara) and Bhojaraj Sitaula (Jhapa) are possible candidates of Shrestha panel for the five members to be elected by general assembly.

“We made frequent attempts for building consensus but Shrestha-panel was not ready for it. They tried to ignore seniority and persons who dedicated their lives to boxing. They didn’t leave options for us except announcing our nominations,” said Awale.

Meanwhile, Rajiv Shrestha blamed Thapa panel of ignoring pleas for consensus. “We tried to build consensus until Thursday but as they rejected all our proposals, my panel decided to announce our candidacy,” said Shrestha. Shrestha said that his panel includes candidates from all over the country as he plans to decentralize boxing.

The general assembly will elect a president, two vice-presidents, a general secretary, a secretary, a treasurer and five members for the executive committee while 10 members will be nominated by the elected president later.

As per NBA statute, there would be 53 voters in the election.

A representative each from 26 member districts, 18 members of the current executive committee, a representative each from three districts, one representative each among men and women boxers, two representatives of technical committee and two representatives of National Sports Council will cast their votes in the election.
