AFC, which represents 46 nations of Asia, is the continent´s apex football body and one of the powerful regional bodies of FIFA, the world governing body of football.[break]
Thapa, one of the four vice-presidents of the newly-elected committee, won 25-20 against Iran´s Ali Saeed Loo in the voting for the vice-president from South & Central Asian Zone. It was the only vice-president´s post decided through voting.
The other three vice-presidents--Tengku Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah of Malaysia, Zhang Jilong of China and Yousuf Yaqoob Al Serkal of the UAE--were elected unopposed. Shah was elected from ASEAN Zone, Jilong from East Zone and Serkal from West Zone.
The newly-elected committee has a four-year tenure.
Thapa has been an executive committee member of AFC since 1995. He has also been serving as the president of ANFA since 1995.
Bin Hammam president for third time
Mohamed Bin Hammam of Qatar was elected unopposed as AFC president for the third consecutive time. Hammam has been serving as AFC president since 2002. Hammam is also a member of the FIFA Executive Committee.
FIFA executive committee members elected
Manilal Fernando of Sri Lanka and Worawi Makudi of Thailand were elected in the FIFA executive committee as representatives from AFC. Among four candidates for the post, Fernando garnered 23 out of 45 eligible votes while Worawi gained 24 votes to retain his seat.
Ali Bin Al Hussein of Jordan was elected FIFA vice-president. Hussein defeated Dr Chung Mong-joon of South Korea in the election. Hussein received 25 out of the 45 eligible votes. Hussein, 35, also became the youngest member of FIFA´s supreme decision-making body.
