KATHMANDU, April 8: Teenager Basanti Kumal Chaudhary of Mid-Western Region broke the long-standing national record in javelin throw at the Dasharath Stadium on Wednesday. Chaudhary, 18, set a new record of 35.46 meters breaking earlier record of 35.28 meters set by Lila Maya Thapa of Nepal Police in 1987.[break]
"I am very happy to break the record," she said after her gold medal winning feat. "I had trained two hours a day with a hope of breaking this record."
Chaudhary’s coach Bikram Jung Thapa said she started training three years ago and hoped that she would do better. Chaudhary will participate in Shot-put and Discuss throw events too.
Her teammate Anju Chaudhary took the silver medal by covering a distance of 31.03 meters while Central Region´s Amrita Chaudhary took the bronze.
Swimming: Karishma makes it six
Swimming sensation Karisma Karki has added two more golds to her Tuesday’s tally of four to make it half a dozen. On Wednesday, Karki won the women’s 200-meter freestyle and the 200-meter backstroke swimming events held at the Satdobato swimming complex.
Karki won the 200 meters freestyle in 2 minutes 46.21 seconds; Shreya Dhital finished second, and Sudha Shrestha took the bronze.
The same trio hogged the podium for another event too. Karki won her sixth gold in the 200 meters backstroke by finishing the distance in 3 minutes 08.10 seconds; Shreya Dhital and Sudha Shrestha claimed the silver and the bronze, respectively.
Yet another record for Keshari
Keshari Chaudhary bettered her national record in women´s triple jump to win gold. The 17-year-old player of Nepal Police jumped 11.30 meters to better her own record of 11.19 meters set last year.

“I am very confident that I will better my own record in long jump too” Said Keshari. High Jump’s national record of 1.55 meters is in her name. Keshari joined Nepal Police this and participating in High Jump, Long Jump, 100X4 and 400X4 relay events.
She is almost certain to win the gold in long jump and high jump. Nepali women’s cricket teams’ national side regular Keshari has set a goal for herself of winning South Asian Games gold medal in next edition. Sabitri Nepali of Nepal Police and Jit Kumari Chaudhary took silver and brozne medals respectively.
Karate: Nepal Police dominates
Mande Kaji Shrestha of the Nepal Police earned a gold in the men’s 50 kg kumite and Sunil Lama of the Armed Police Force (APF) bagged the silver. In the 60 kg women’s kumite, Tara Gurung of the Western Region and Sapana Lama of the APF won the gold and silver, respectively.
Likewise, in the men’s team kata, the Central Region team—made up of Parshu Ram Bastola, Laxman Khadka, Rabindra Manandhar and Surya Bhattarai—won the gold; in the women’s team event, Nepal Police earned the gold.
In the men’s individual kata competition, Purusottam Baskota earned the gold for the Central Region, and Ganesh Bahadur of the Nepal Police bagged the silver.
In the women’s individual kata competition, Suvadra Shrestha of the APF clinched the gold and the Eastern Region’s Shusmita Shrestha earned the silver; Krishna Kumar Lama of the Eastern Region and Malang Gharti Magar of the Mid-Western Region earned bronze medals for the event.
Gaurika sets three more nat’l records, wins total 12 golds
ITF taekwondo: Maharjan wins gold
Aamir Maharjan of Central Region defeated Krishna Tamang of Far West to clinch the gold in 40-45 kg category of ITF Taekwondo in the ongoing national games. Ravi Gurung of Western Region and Anil Gurung of Eastern region bagged the bronze medal.
In 51-56 kg category, Radhe Bahadur Tamang earned gold for Far West and Aamir Shrestha of Eastern Region won the silver. Likewise, Chausi Dangol of central region and Jhalak Budha Magar of Western Region bagged the gold and silver in 56-60 kg category, respectively.
In 61-65 kg, Niraj Rana Magar of Central Region defeated Ishwor Thapa Magar of Western Region to clinch the gold. Similarly, Basu Dev Bhatta of Central Region won the gold in 66-70 kg category by beating Hem Bahadur Sunwar of Mid Western Region.
In 71-75 kg category, Durga Bahadur Shrestha of Central Region clinched the gold after beating Khem Raj Acharya of Eastern Region.
In women’s 51-56 kg category, Malati Tamang of Far West bagged the gold while Tulasi Rajthala earned the silver for Central Region. Likewise, Soma Lama clinched gold for Central Region and Sapana Gurung of Western Region stood second in 56-60 kg category.
New record in 100m hurdles

Santosh Shrestha of Armed Police Force broke the national records in 110m men’s hurdles. Shrestha covered the distance in 16.08 to win gold with a new record. He broke Rajendra Kunwar’s record of 16.17 seconds set a decade ago.
Dhirendra Chauadhary of Nepal Police (16.34 seconds) and Kiran Chaudhary of Central Region (19.67 seconds) also made the podium finish.
Meanwhile, Suryamaya Rai of Armed Police Force clinched the gold in women´s 5000m finishing the race in 18:29:07 minutes. It was her second individual gold. On Tuesday, she won gold in 1500m. Likewise, Bishworupa Budha of Mid Western Region bagged the silver and Hari Devi Rajlawat of Central Region won the bronze.
Arjun Prasad Dhakal of Armed Police Force (APF) won a gold in men´s 10,000 m. Dhakal finished the race in 32:08: 35 minutes. Likewise, Laxman Malla Thakuri of Central Region bagged the silver and Durga Budha of Mid Western Region finished third for the bronze.
Weightlifting: Jhanta sets new record
Jhanta Kumari Katuwal of Nepal Police set a new national record in 53 kg women´s weightlifting on Wednesday at Dasharath Stadium in the ongoing Fifth National Games.
Katuwal lifted 164 kg, 74 kg in snatch and 90 kg in clean and jerk to better her own record of 157 kg. So it’s a new national record in, snatch and clean and jerk section too.
Shanti Devi Chaudhary of Saptari won silver lifting the total of 80 kg and Deva Pun of Dang bagged the bronze in the category.
In 58 kg category, Uttam Khatri of Nepal Police won gold lifting a total of 112 kg, 47 kg in snatch and 65 kg in clean and jerk. Ram Kumari Chaudhary of Dang bagged silver lifting 90 kg and Kailali’s Prabha Chaudhary claimed silver with 87 kg lift.
Volleyball: Semifinal lineup confirmed
The Nepal Police, the Central Region, the Western Region and the Far-Western Region all advanced into the semi-final round of the women’s volleyball competition.
Strangely, all the volleyball matches, which are being held at the covered hall of the National Sports Council, have been settled through straight-set victories. In the match held on Wednesday, the Western Region thrashed the Mid-Western Region in three straight sets, 25-6, 25-8 and 25-9.
Likewise, the Nepal Police eased past the Far-Western Region in straight sets too, 25-13, 25-10 and 25-18. In the last women’s match, the Central Region defeated the PLA Sports Club, 25-20, 25-14 and 25-20.
In the men’s volleyball events, the Western Region had an easy victory over the PLA Sports Club, 25-14, 25-17 and 25-19. In another match, the Nepal Police thrashed the Eastern Region in straight sets, 25-10, 25-18 and 25-17.
Other sports
The Central Region squad of Robin Thapa, Dipesh Koju, Bijay Limbu, Bikash Koju and Aman Tamang clinched the gold in the Under-16 Junior Team event, while the APF won the silver and Far-Western Region bagged the bronze in gymnastics.
Prem Prasad Gurung of the Annapurna Archery Club took home the gold in the individual bamboo section, with 552 points; Jay Prakash Chhantyal (537 points) bagged the silver and Kharendra Malla (525 points) won the bronze in Archery.
