BIRATNAGAR, Feb 2: Arniko Higher Secondary School in Rajghat VDC-9 of Morang district has been appointing teacher on the basis of how much amount an applicant can offer to the school. After a teacher Gyanu Shrestha retired, the school management selected Gita Niraula for the post as she was willing to furnish Rs 200,000, the maximum offered by any applicant.

Another applicant Jamuna Khadka was rejected as she was willing to part with only Rs 175,574. Another teacher Shiva Khanal, however, said that it was beyond his wherewithal to take part in the “expensive competition”. [break]

Many teachers who had hoped for a posting in the school have condemned the move of appointing teacher by openly demanding “charity”. “I was aware about the vacant post in the school and had wished to apply. However, I would have to simply skip the process if the appointment is on the basis of money,” said Ranjana Shrestha, a teacher at Prabhat Primary School.

Interestingly, the school did not carry out the “shameful” activity behind a veil. The bargaining was going on openly at the meeting held at the school on Tuesday. The meeting was attended by the school management committee, associations of teachers and parents and the representatives of CPN (Maoists), among others.

“After a thorough discussion on the recruiting process, we arrived at a decision that it should be done on the basis of the charity offered to the school,” said the chairman of the school management commitee Amrit Kumar Angbuhang, rather in a very relaxed tone.
