KATHMANDU, Nov 21: The Swiss government has agreed to provide a grant assistance of Swiss Franc 5 million (about Rs 446 million) to Nepal to support the activities of Nepal Peace Trust Fund (NPTF).

Joint-secretary of Ministry of Finance Lal Shanker Ghimire and Ambassador of Switzerland to Nepal Thomas Gass signed an agreement to this effect on behalf of their respective governments on Monday. [break]

According to the Ministry of Finance, the grant assistance will be utilized to finance cantonment management and integration/rehabilitation of the Maoist combatants, assistance to conflict affected persons and reconstruction of public infrastructure.

It will also be utilized to promote security and transitional justice and support Constituent Assembly, elections and peace building initiatives.

The NPTF was created in February 2007, when a group of donors agreed to financially support Nepal to implement the Comprehensive Peace Agreement commitments.

Switzerland has been supporting the peace process in Nepal under the joint financing arrangements (JFAs) signed between the Nepal government and the donor group, including Switzerland.
