Strike throws life out of gear across country

ILAM, March 6: Normal life was thrown out of gear across the country on Wednesday due to a strike called by National Federal People´s Republic Front led by the CPN-Maoist.



The strike enforcers did not allow public vehicles, factories, industries and educational institutes to run in almost all parts of the country. However, reports of violent clashes, arson and vandalism were not reported in most parts. [break]



According to Republica-correspondent Bhim Chapagain, a group of people vandalized Mahendra Ratna Multiple Campus in Ilam on Wednesday. They entered into the college compound at around 9: 15 and ransacked windows of staff rooms and administrative offices.



The campus units of All Nepal National Free Students´ Union, All Nepal National Independent Students´ Union and Nepal Students´ Union have criticized the vandalism. However, the CPN-Maoist, one of the organizers of Tuesday´s nationwide strike, has claimed that its cadres were not involved in the vandalism. "We will investigate who vandalized the college," said Ashok Pradhan, Ilam Office Secretary of the CPN-Maoist.


In Siraha, enforcers of the strike forcibly shut down all schools. According to Murari Prasad Sah, Siraha chapter president of Private and Boarding School´s Organization (PABSON), the enforcers went to each and every school in Lahan of Siraha and forcibly shut them down, wrote Republica correspondent Mithilesh Yadav.



According to Republica correspondent Kalendra Sejuwal, in Surkhet, the Nepal Federal People´s Republic Front led by the CPN-Maoist called off its strike effective from 9 a.m. Tuesday, keeping in view two festivals that are going on in the district.



Thammar Bishta, Surkhet secretary of the CPN-Maoist, said they decided to call off the strike upon requests made by the organizers of the festivals. Now, tourism festival and religious festival are going in Surkhet.
