KATHMANDU, Nov 4: Nepali Congress (NC) President Sushil Koirala has asked the party´s former Constituent Assembly (CA) members not to lobby for the revival of the CA as the party has already taken an institutional decision to go for fresh election.

Addressing a gathering of the party´s municipal presidents in Bhaktapur Saturday, Koirala cautioned the former CA members against publicly speaking against the party´s decision and that such an act would amount to breach of the party discipline.[break]“The party has already taken a decision to go for fresh polls and speaking against the decision would amount to breach of party discipline," he said.

Koirala also ruled out the possibility of the CA revival, arguing that their efforts to arrive at consensus on contentious issues have failed even after nearly five-month long negotiations. Arguing that people are in favor of fresh election, Koirala stressed the need for forming a national consensus government to create environment conducive to the polls.

Koirala´s remarks come in the wake of the party´s 78 former CA members criticizing the decision of the CWC meeting on Wednesday to close the option of CA revival. Former CA members from the party had urged the party leadership to keep the democratic option of CA revival open.

Addressing the function, senior leader of the party Sher Bahadur Deuba said that the party should not beg for government leadership but fight for it. Likewise, another leader Ram Chandra Paudel said that the party leaders should have a unanimous voice on holding fresh election as the party has already taken a decision to this effect.

Meanwhile, the party issuing a separate press statement has also cautioned the party´s former CA members not to make any statements against the official decision of the party.

In the statement issued on behalf of the NC Central Working Committee on Saturday, NC Spokesperson Dilendra Prasad Badu said NC CWC meeting had taken unanimous decision to go for fresh election as it would be in the best interests of country, people and the democracy. The CWC meeting had taken the decision concluding that there was no point in further giving continuity to negotiations.

Earlier, a national gathering of NC district presidents, held in Sindhupalchowk had kept the option of CA revival open with Deuba, Paudel and some district presidents rooting for the CA revival as a legitimate option to resolve the deadlock
