Staying cool

The days are definitely getting hotter and we still have a few months to go before the weather starts becoming a bit agreeable. If you are feeling a lot more tired than usual or coming down with frequent headaches, it just might be that the heat is getting to you. Though staying in where there are fans and ACs sounds like the ideal thing to do, that’s not always an option. However, you can bring down your body temperature naturally and feel a bit more at ease despite the almost suffocating air around you.

First up, make sure you stay hydrated. Carry a water bottle with you and keep sipping water throughout the day. Drinking coconut water is a great way to refresh and revitalize your body. The vitamins, minerals, and electrolytes in coconut water make it an effective way to rehydrate and reenergize your body when you have heat stress. Drinking buttermilk can also help cool down your body. It’s also full of probiotics, vitamins, and minerals that will help restore your body’s natural energy if you’re feeling drained by the heat.

Then you can try a yoga technique called the “Sitali breath” that has a cooling effect on your body and mind. It will help you to relax and cool down both physically and mentally. To do this, sit in a comfortable position and then stick out your tongue and try to roll the outer edges together. If your tongue doesn’t curl like this, you can pucker your lips. Then slowly inhale through your mouth and exhale out through your nose. Continue breathing like this for up to five minutes.

It would also be a good idea to not wipe sweat away. It sounds gross, but allowing sweat to evaporate on the skin is the way your body cools itself down. Relaxing with your feet in a cold soak will also help bring down body heat. Simply prepare a tub with a mix of water and ice cubes into which you place your feet and let it soak for 15 to 20 minutes. You can also add some essentials oils for a soothing effect.

Lastly, sipping on some peppermint tea or drink on a hot day is a good idea. Peppermint has menthol in it and that has the ability to cool the body instantly. A drink with a drop or two of peppermint will have you feeling better in no time. A hot cup of peppermint tea is also not a bad idea either because hot drinks can make you sweat it out and reduce your body temperature.
