At a program organized to give the document prepared by the Centre final shape, it was informed that the plan has been prepared to replace seeds of vegetables and crops now being imported, by 2025. [break]
At present, 60 percent of seeds of vegetables and crops are imported from foreign countries. As against Nepal´s needs of 2,000 metric tonnes of seeds of cauliflower, cabbage, cucumber, radish, carrot, and mustard and beans, only 900 metric tons have been produced.
The plan targets to make Nepal self -reliant by producing hybrid seeds by 2025 in Nepal.
National Planning Commission Vice Chairman Deependra Bahadur Chhetri said Prime Minister Dr. Baburam Bhattarai was also positive on it and it plans to increase investment in this regards, whereas Seed Development Officer Dilaram Bhandari said it will make Nepal self-reliant.
It was also informed that tomato and cucumber hybrid seeds prepared in Nepal have been popular.
