Sportsman Shrestha dies at 47

KATHMANDU, Sept 29: Nepal Archery Association President Laxman Shrestha passed away on Sunday at the age of 47. Shrestha was undergoing neurological treatment at the Annapurna Neuro Hospital, Maitighar. He was receiving treatments since last three months at various hospitals of India and Nepal. [break]



Shrestha, survived by his wife and two children -- a son and a daughter -- was known as dynamic personality in Nepali sports. He was former kyokushin karate player and former board member of National Sports Council. Besides this, he was the current executive member of Nepal Olympic Committee, senior vice president of Nepal Confederation of Sports (NECOS), sports wing of CPN-UML, and also the founder of Shinkyokushin in Nepal.



Shrestha´s body was kept at the Dasharath Stadium premises on Sunday evening to offer last respects. Office bearers of the National Sports Council (NSC) Pitambar Timsina, Yubaraj Lama, Indra Bahadur Thing, Nepal Olympic Committee officials, officials of different sports associations, NSC employees, players, coaches, mediapersons, family members and relatives among other offered tributes to him on the NSC premises.



His body was later taken to the Pashupati Aryaghat for cremation. CPN-UML Chairman Jhalanath Khanal, leaders Surendra Pandey, Ghana Shyam Bhusal, and Yogesh Bhattarai visited Aryaghat to pay their last respects to Shrestha.

Meanwhile, NSC, NECOS and Nepal Full-contact Karate Federation has issued separate statements on Sunday expressing sorrow on the demise of Shrestha. NECOS has decided to lower its flag to half mast for three days and maintain condolence books at all its offices.
