Sports Budget Doubled

KATHMANDU, Nov 21: The budget speech has almost doubled the allocations to the National Sports Council (NSC) as compared to that of last year. It has set aside around Rs 490 million for the NSC.



Of the total sum, Rs 380 million is for recurrent expenditure and Rs 110 million for capital expenditure. The budget has earmarked a total of around Rs 627 for the Ministry of Youth and Sports (MoYS) for the fiscal year 2010/11.[break]



Last year, the government had allocated Rs 270 million for the sports sector and later provided Rs 60 million to NSC for the country´s participation in the 11th South Asian Games. The budget has also allocated an additional purse of Rs 30 million for the sports and extra activities under the MoYS.



The budget speech, given by Minister of Finance Surendra Pandey on Thursday, has allocated Rs. 100 million for the 6th National Games to be held in February/March of 2011. Necessary allocation has also been made for paying the debts taken by National Sports Council for the country´s participation in the ongoing 16th Asian Games in Guangzhou.



The government, in its latest budget, has included sports among the top priority sectors and categorically mentioned five different programs for developing infrastructure and motivating athletes.



Meanwhile, the budget has also come up with schemes of rewarding the medal-winning athletes with cash incentives. "Arrangements will also be made to provide cash prizes to the Nepalese players winning gold medals in Olympic, Asian and South Asian Games," stated the budget speech.



The budget also categorically emphasized on the development of Nepali football by organizing league matches that will aim at increasing the efficiency of the Nepalese football players.



An arrangement to develop sports infrastructure and organize periodic sports competitions in each district has also been made. The budget has decided to continue the support for building regional sports complexes in Sunsari, Chitwan and Kailali with an added committment of building a stadium in Damak of Jhapa.



Likewise, Rs 40 million has been allocated for the construction of cricket grounds of international standard in Kathmandu´s Mulpani and Rupandehi´s Bhairahawa.
