SPORTS BRIEFS: SNB Memorial Cricket from Sunday

KATHMANDU, June 4: The Sixth SNB Memorial Inter-school Cricket Tournament 2068 will kick off on Sunday at the Pulchowk engineering ground. Altogether 15 schools are participating in the 11-day event, the organizer Adarsh Vidhya Mandir (AVM) announced during a press conference on Saturday.



The tournament is being held after a gap of two years. Defending champion Budhanilkantha has not registered its name. [break]The tournament is being held since 2004, except in 2009 and 2010, in the memory of Satya Narayan Bahadur Shrestha, the founder of AVM. All the matches upto the quarterfinals will be held at Pulchowk. The semifinals and the final, on June 15, will be held at TU cricket ground, Kirtipur. The matches will be of Twenty 20 format and will be played in knockout style.



Karate team returns


KATHMANDU: A three-member Nepali karate team returned to Kathmandu on Saturday after participating in the First Asian Full Contact Karate Tournament held in Manila, the Philippines. Kancha Lal Waiba, who represented Nepal in the U-60 kg, was adjudged the best player in his weight category.



He defeated a player of the Philippines in the first round. He then defeated a Lebanese player in the quarterfinal before losing to an Iranian player. Other members of the Nepali team were Bhupesh Shakya (U-70 kg) and coach Chandra Shyam Dangol. Altogether 17 nations had participated in the one-day event held on May 28.



Rai wins Dr Robert Koch Memorial Open Road Race



KATHMANDU: Bhumi Raj Rai won the title in the men’s open category of the Fourth Dr Robert Koch Memorial Open Road Race Championship on Saturday. Rai finished ahead of Laxman Malla Thakuri in the 5 km race held around Patan Durbar square. In the women’s open 3 km race, Kanchi Maya Koju, Surya Maya Rai and Brinda Shrestha claimed the top three spots respectively.



Meanwhile, Dipesh Samya won the title of high school boys’ 5 km race. Buddha Kumar and Sitaram Chaudhary finished second and third respectively. The top three winners of the high school girls’ 3 km race were Sarita Basi, Sumitra Koju and Srijana Danuwar respectively. The race was jointly organized by Nepal TB Eradication Corporation, Lalitpur, Lalitpur Athletics Club and Patan Jaycees in the memory of Dr Robert Koch, who discovered the bacteria that causes Tuberculosis.
