SPORTS BRIEFS: Seven players share lead

KATHMANDU, July 13: Seven players occupied the top spot on Tuesday with three points apiece following the completion of the second and third rounds in the First Lalitpur Cup International Open Rating Chess Tournament being held at the Shooting Complex in Satdobato.



Continuing with their unbeaten run on day two, Rupankar Nath, Trailokya Nanda and Santu Mandal of India, Ganeshman Duwal, Wilamlal Shrestha, Bishwabijay Ghimire and Badrilal Nepali are jointly in the top spot. [break]







Similarly, IM Saptarishi Rai, FM Akshay Khamparia of India share the second position with 2.5 points apiece. Veteran Sitaram Agrawal, Prem Krishna Maharjan, Rajan Puri and Sankhamjamdar have collected two points each.





Roll ball team off to Hong Kong



KATHMANDU, July 13: A nine-member Nepali roll ball team, including seven players, left for Victoria, Hong Kong on Tuesday to participate in the First Asian Roll Ball Championship to be held from July 16-18.



Sagar Lama, Sajib Maharjan, Kumar Gurung, Asya BC, Manoj Bajracharya, Satish Shrestha and Ranje Baidya are the players. All of them are from RIBS School. Bir Krishna Maharjan is the coach and Arpan Puri is the manager of the team.



Meanwhile, National Sports Council Acting Treasurer Min Krishna Maharjan bade farewell to the team amidst a function.





White House, Golden Gate set up final clash



KATHMANDU, July 13: White House and Golden Gate on Tuesday set up the title clash of Valley-wide Men´s Open Basketball Tournament winning their respective semifinal matches at the covered hall of Dasharath Stadium.



White House put a brake on NASA´s run with a comfortable 74-46 victory leading all sets 18-13, 18-15, 19-3, 19-15 respectively. Binod Shrestha top scored with 23 points for the winning side.



In another semifinal, Golden Gate eased past South Siders 67-39. Golden Gate were held to a 9-9 draw in the first quarter but lead the remaining quarters 13-9, 26-12, 19-9 to make it through to the final. Joe contributed 26 points for Golden Gate.



The final match of the tournament being organized by Madan Bhandari Sports Academy will be held on Wednesday.





Inter-school football



KATHMANDU, July 13: Nishith Home Academy on Tuesday defeated Dhrubatar 2-0 in the ongoing Coca Cola Cup Inter-school Boys´ Football Tournament underway at the Sano Gaucharan ground. Padam Tamang and Rabin Shreshta netted apiece for Nishith.



Kailash Bodhi beat Adarsh High School 2-1. Pema Chultrim scored both goals for the winning side while Rabin Neupane scored a consolation goal for Adarsh. In another match, Ever Vision hammered Arunjyoti 5-0. Manish Nepal scored twice for the winning side while Sanjay Tamang, Bikash Niraula, and Sandip Thapa scored one each.



In other matches at the Chyasal ground, Bajra Barahi defeated Padma Prakash 3-2 in tie-breaker after the regulation time ended in a 2-2 tie. Likewise, Siddhartha Vanasthali beat Nepal Rastriya Nirman.
