SPORTS BRIEFS: Sainik storms into semifinal

JHAPA, Oct 14: Sainik Football Club of Jhapa stormed into the semifinal of Eastern Region-level Knockout Football Tournament underway at Surunga, Jhapa.



Sainik defeated Urlabari Football Team of Morang 3-0 on Friday during its first round match. [break]



The man-of-the-match adjudged Dipen Rai emerged hero for the winning side. Rai netted twice for Sainik. Rai opened the scoring in the 19th minute and sealed the team´s victory in the 74th minute. Samir Katuwal had scored the second goal for Sainik in the 62nd minute.



On Saturday, Rastriya Jagriti Club of Sunsari will take on Mechi Football Team of Jhapa. The tournament being organized by Surunga Jaycees is being held at Kankai Higher Secondary School, Surunga.



Kenwakai karate team off to Sri Lanka


KATHMANDU: A four-member kenwakai karate team left for Welimada, Sri Lanka on Friday to participate in the First International Invitational Gojurio Karate-do Kenwakai Tournament to be held there on October 22 and 23. The players include Suman Timilsina in 55 kg, Purushottam Adhikari in 60 kg and Sonu Thapa in 45 kg categories. Bishan Singh Khadka, the vice president of Japan Gojurio Karate Do Kenwakai Association and the chief coach, is the team leader.



Timilsina and Thapa will also compete in kata event. Thapa will join the team in Butwal. Timilsina was the gold medal winner of team event in the Asian WKF Karate Tournament and bronze medal winner of kumute held in Dhaka, Bangladesh in January. Khadka will also play the role of a judge in the tournament.
