SPORTS BRIEFS: Rara Hill, TIA advance

KATHMANDU, Feb 23: Rara Hill and TIA on Saturday advanced into the quarterfinals of boys´ section in the Second U-14 Inter-school National Basketball Tournament being held in the capital. Rara Hill defeated Valley Public 31-26 while TIA enjoyed walkover from Baylor Academy. Suraj Thing contributed the highest nine points for Rara Hill. In the girls´ section, Mount Annapurna High School of Pokhara and Baylor Academy of Kavre made it to the pre-quarterfinals winning their respective matches.



Meanwhile, Third Eye defeated Nepal-Japan 8-6, Innovative defeated Mount Glory 13-6 and Baba overcame Bhadrakali 11-2 to confirm their places in the pre-quarterfinals. [break]



NNIPA completes preparations

KATHMANDU
: Nepal National and International Players Association on Saturday informed that it has completed all the preparations for the seventh edition of NNIPA Player of the Year Awards. NNIPA is all set to reward one best player each from 22 game disciplines and one sports personality as the Ideal Sports Personality.



Meanwhile, Gajaraj Trust inked a four-year sponsorship deal for Ideal Sports Personality. The trust shall provide Rs 30,000 annually for four years for the award. NNIPA President Deepak Bista and Gajaraj Trust President Ram Joshi signed the deal.



Host Daffodil in finals of all 3 events

KATHMANDU
: Host Daffodil School advanced into the finals of all three events of the Daffodil Cup Inter-school Football and Basketball Tournament on Saturday being held at its premises in the capital. In the senior boys´ basketball semifinal, Daffodil edged past Xavier International 45-30. Chonde Lama contributed the highest 20 points for the host, which set up a title clash with defending champion NIMS that edged past Golden Peak 55-49. Gopi Lama netted the highest 15 points for the winning team. In the senior girls´ basketball, Daffodil outplayed Pennwood 37-14 riding on 14 points from Frezilla Tamang.



In another semifinal of girls´ section, Valley Public overcame NIMS 30-25. Soniya Limbu netted the highest 14 points for Valley Public. In the junior boys´ football, Bikram Oli stole the show with a hat-trick as the host defeated The Excelsior 5-2 in the semifinal. Mingma Lama scored a brace. Meanwhile, Kathmandu Valley defeated White Field 5-4 in another semifinal. Om Khadka scored a hat-trick for Kathmandu Valley while Tenzing Tamba and Navendra Karki scored one each. Pasang Dong, Fursang Roshan, Yaman Shrestha and Ishan Khadgi scored a goal each for White Field.



Host HIMS defends title

KATHMANDU
: Host and defending champion HIMS claimed the title of Sixth HIMS Inter-school Boys Basketball Tournament for the third time in a row on Saturday. HIMS edged past Mount Glory 46-35 on its home court in Jorpati with 16 points from Tenzing Rigzin. Ashish Lole netted 11 points for Mount Glory. Tenzing Rigzin of the host was declared the most valuable player. Kuber Singh Rana, the IGP of Nepal Police, gave away awards to the winner and runner-up.
