SPORTS BRIEFS: Maharjan quits NKF

KATHMANDU, Feb 3: Nepal Karate Federation (NKF) Senior Vice-president Min Krishna Maharjan resigned from the post on Wednesday.



His resignation came following the confusion regarding karate players´ participation in the 11th South Asian Games (SAG). [break]



“There still prevails confusion regarding the participation of karate players in the SAG at the last moment and it is shameful for me to be in the federation as a responsible official,” Maharjan said.



Altogether 15 players were selected to participate in the SAG and were sent off to Thailand for a three-week training. But 10 players were called by the hosts for participation in SAG and only eight among them will be eligible to participate there.



Maharjan is also the board member of National Sports Council (NSC), Martial Arts coordinator of NSC and international referee of karate.





Cash prize announced to pugilists



KATHMANDU, Feb 3: Nepal Boxing Association (NBA) and others announced cash prize for the medal winners of the 11th South Asian Games (SAG) at a function organized to bid farewell to the boxing team that left for Dhaka, Bangladesh on Wednesday.



Nepal Boxing Association (NBA) President Rabiraj Thapa announced cash prize of Rs 50,000, Rs 20,000 and Rs 10,000 to the gold, silver and bronze winners of the 11th SAG respectively on behalf of NBA. Likewise, NBA Treasurer and Lalitpur Boxing Association President Ram Awale also declared same cash prize to the players.



Former boxing player Krishna Raj Gurung also promised to award gold, silver and bronze winners with a cash prize of Rs 50,000, Rs 25,000 and Rs 15,000 respectively.



A-nine member boxing team including six pugilists, chief coach Prachanda Sharam, foreign coach Tshenyan Oldov and team manager Rajiv Shrestha left for Dhaka on Wednesday. The boxing team had returned Nepal after a two-week long training in Thailand provided by Thailand Boxing Association.





Valley Public in semis



KATHMANDU, Feb 3: Valley Public entered the semifinals of the Kwiks Inter-school Girls´ Basketball Tournament thrashing Reliance International 24-6 on Wednesday.



Samichan Bista was the highest scorer with 12 points while Parina Waiba of Valley Public was adjudged the most-valuable-player (MVP).



In another quarterfinal match, Anusha Malla netted 20 points to steer Tungram International Academy (TIA) into the semifinals defeating Mahendra Bhawan 29-18. However, Mahendra Bhawan´s Ruchika Basnet was declared the MVP.



Meanwhile, Kantipur thrashed Daffodil 35-4 and Teresa hammered Bal Mandir 28-2 in other qarterfinal matches of the day. Suchita Gurung of Kantipur and Ganga bagged the MVP awards. Likewise, Rohina Limbu of Kantipur and Manju Banu of Teresa were the highest scorers with 16 points and 11 points, respectively.
