SPORTS BRIEFS: Madhyapur, Kathmandu triumph

KATHMANDU, Nov 21: Madhyapur Youth Association and Kathmandu Club emerged victorious on Monday during the Martyrs Memorial Red Bull B Division Football League held at Nepal Police Academy, Maharajgunj.



The win lifts Madhyapur at the top of the table from second spot with nine points. [break]



This is the third victory of Madhyapur from as many matches played. Madhyapur has not conceded single goal so far in the league. Kathmandu Club also registered its second consecutive victory with 2-1 win over Chyasal Youth Club. Kathmandu had taken 17th minute lead through Sajan Pradhan but Arun Shrestha cancelled the lead nine minutes later.



Sujendra Bhuju restored Kathmandu’s lead in the 64th minute which turned out to be the match winning goal. With the win, Kathmandu climbed on third position with six points. Despite having equal points as that of Kathmandu, Sankata is on second place on the basis of goal difference whereas Chyasal is on fourth.


Regional A div league kicks off


KATHMANDU: The regional league kicked off in A division districts on Monday for selection of teams for the National League. Group A league kicked off at Birtamod and group B in Makawanpur. In group A league, Sainik Youth Club of Jhapa registered a thumping 3-0 win over NFC, Chitwan. In another match at the same venue, Chartare of Morang played 1-1 draw against Diamond Youth Club of Parsa. Similarly, Workers Martyrs Memorial of Makawanpur and Jaykisan Sports Club of Banke started group B campaign in a winning note. Workers beat Vijay Sports of Kailali 3-1 coming from a goal deficit. Jaykisan saw off Saubhagya of Rupandehai 2-0.


Baba Cooperative supports MYA


KATHMANDU: Baba Savings & Credit Cooperative on Monday provided football gears to B-division team Madhyapur Youth Association (MYA). Baba’s president Navin Shrestha handed over 30 football bags and gears worth Rs 30,000 to MYA president and former national captain Upendra Man Singh amidst a function. Shrestha also promised to continue support to MYA, which was established with the aim of promoting football in Madhyapur and is running a training academy. MYA president Singh thanked Baba for its support. “We are happy for the support and hope that such support will help the association to survive and encourage players to do well in football,” he said.


Host Odyssey, Mount Glory into semis


KATHMANDU: Host Odyssey and Mount Glory on Monday advanced into the semifinal of the Fourth Odyssey Inter-school Junior Boys’ Basketball being held in the capital. Odyssey saw off Mahamanjushree 19-18 with 12 points from Ashok Pyakurel. Mount Glory eased past Galaxy 31-17. Dipesh Lama contributed 16 points for Mount Glory. Mount Glory will take on host in the semifinal. Awareness International Academy (AIA) and Angels’ Heart were other teams to book places in the last four. AIA oust Prithivi 37-27 with 12 points from Rajendra Khadka and Angels’ Heart had a hard fourth 21-20 win over Valley Public. Prabin Pun netted eight points for AIA. During girls’ 3-on-3 basketball, Angels’ Heart saw off Mahendra Bhawan 14-11 to book semifinal berth. Similarly, Galaxy, Teresa B and A also made it to the semifinal.



Horizon A, B storm into semis


DHARAN: Horizon A and B on Monday stormed into the semifinal of Inter-club Open Basketball Tournament being held at Dharan, Sunsari as the group winner of A and B groups respectively. In the opening match of the day, Horizon B registered a hard fought 51-17 win over Barula Basketball Club to top group A. Sudip Rai top-scored for Horizon B with 22 points which included four three pointers. Barula also made it to the last four as the runner up of Group A. Similarly, Horizon A thumped Jute Bikash, Itahari 92-45. Ram Sunuwar contributed the highest 28 points for the winning side with eight three pointers. Hariyali Basketball secured places in the last four as the runner up of group A. Horizon B will take on Hariyali and Horizon A will meet Barula in the semifinal matches to be played on Tuesday.
