SPORTS BRIEFS: Lamichhane wins second round

KATHMANDU, Oct 2: Somant Lamichhane defeated Deepak Pokharel 11-15, 15-10, 15-5 on Saturday in the second round of men´s singles during the Panchakumari Open Badminton Tournament, organized by Panchakumari Club at Sinamangal, Kathmandu.



Rajendra Khadka and Kanchan Dhungana also won their respective matches of the second round in the category. [break]



Siddartha Sharma and Lochan Dahal teamed up to thrash the pair of Kshitiz Limbu and Sushil Poudel 5-6, 15-9 in the men´s doubles second round. Likewise, the pairs of Kanchan Singh Dhungana and Rajendra Khadka, Lilendra Shah and Ganesh Subba, and Deepak Regmi and Prakash Rai won their respective matches on Saturday.





Birendra Sainik, Vanasthali win



KATHMANDU, Oct 2: Defending champions Birendra Sainik and Siddhartha Vanasthali booked quarterfinal berths on Saturday in the Pepsi Cup Fourth Inter-school Invitational Football Tournament being held at Sano Thimi, Bhaktapur.



Birendra Sainik thrashed Gyanodaya Bal Batika 4-0. Anup Subedi, Tirtha Khatri, Roshan Rai and Uttam Gurung scored one each for the winning side. Siddhartha Vanasthali ousted Vinayak Shiksha Niketan 4-1 riding on a hat-trick of Kabi Khadka and another goal from Rajesh Loshej. Birkrishna Maharjan scored the consolation goal for Vinayak.



In another match, Child Nature School beat Buddha Academy 3-2. Nischal Basnet scored twice after Sajan Thapamagar had opened the scoring for the winning side. Krishnaram Anju and Ramsundar Nepali scored one goal apiece for Buddha Academy.





Pentagon, Prime win titles



KATHMANDU, Oct 2: Pentagon and Prime College won the boys´ and girls´ titles of the Second Jaycees Cup Basketball Tournament on Saturday held at Patan Campus.



Pentagon had a narow 64-60 win over Whitehouse to lift the trophy in boys´ section. Sanjay Byanjankar of Pentagon won the most valuable player award. Prime saw off Whitehouse 29-21 in girls´ section. Merina Shrestha of Whitehouse took home the most valuable player award.





Buddha Air football



KATHMANDU, Oct 2: Head Office and Sales department on Saturday defeated Operation department 2-1 to win the title of the football tournament during the sports festival organized to mark the 13th anniversary of Buddha Air.



Manoj Sapkota and Kishor Shrestha scored for the winners while Siddhartha Bahadur Singh scored for Operation. Amrit Gurung of Operation was adjudged the best player of the tournament.





Radio Thaha win



KATHMANDU, Oct 2: Radio Thaha 99.6 MHz won the opening match of the District-wide Knockout Media Cup Football Tournament in Makawanpur on Saturday. Radio Thaha defeated Janata Jindabad Weekly 2-1 in tiebreaker after the regulation time ended in a goalless draw.



Altogether 11 media institutions are competing in the tournament organized by Nepal Sports Journalists Forum, Makawanpur Branch.
