SPORTS BRIEFS: IAAF president to visit Nepal

KATHMANDU: International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) President Lamine Diack has confirmed his Nepal visit on Monday for the upcoming 11th Asian Cross Country Championship.



Local organizers of the championship, Nepal Amateur Athletics Association (NAAA) and Nepal Amateur Veterans Athletics Association, informed media on Monday that the Senegalese has confirmed his visit to Nepal in his itinerary. [break]



According to NAAA General Secretary Rabi Rajkarnikar, Diack will be in Kathmandu on February 18. Diack is scheduled to attend the council meeting of Asian Athletics Association (AAA) on Feb 19 and will be a guest of honor during the championship on February 20. He will return on February 20.



The championship, one of the major events of the AAA, will be held at the Gokarna Forest Resort. Altogether 22 countries have confirmed their participation in the championship. The championship features senior, junior and team events in both men and women´s categories. The winners of the championship will directly qualify for the World Cross Country Championship.



Int´l volleyball in February

KATHMANDU: An international volleyball tournament featuring renowned clubs of Nepal and other South Asian countries will be held in the third week of February in Bhaktapur.



The organizers of the Second International Club Championship Workers Cup Volleyball Tournament said during a press conference on Monday that the tournament will kick off on February 19 -- a week later than the earlier schedule -- at Bhaktapur´s Martyrs Memorial Sports Ground.



Tribhuvan Army Club, Nepal Police Club, Armed Police Club and Myagdi Volleyball Training Center, who claimed the top four spots respectively during the Seventh Nationwide Workers Cup, will be representing Nepal in the tournament. Likewise, volleyball clubs from Bangladesh, India and Sri Lanka will also participate in the tournament.



Siddhanath win inaugural match



MAHENDRANAGAR: Siddhanath Multiple Campus won the inaugural match of the Sharad Memorial Open National Volleyball Tournament that kicked off in Mahendranagar on Monday. Siddhanath defeated Amity College at their home court in the tournament with the highest cash prize in the Far Western Region. Likewise, PLA Club, APF Club, Baitadi District Sports Association and Pragati Youth Club also won their respective matches. The winners will receive Rs 55,000 while the runners-up and second runners-up will walk away with Rs 31,000 and Rs 20,000, respectively. Altogether 25 teams from Far Western and Mid Western regions are competing in the six-day event.


Innovative, Nirmal in QF



KATHMANDU: Innovative ´A´ and Nirmal School reached the senior boys´ quarterfinal of the First Innovative Inter-school Basketball Tournament on Monday. The hosts thrashed Chandani 69-29 on their home court at Sankhamul and topped the group ´A´ of the tournament. Gyanodaya finished runners-up in the group to reach quarterfinal. Meanwhile, Nirmal eased past Babylon 49-9 in the group C, where Kavya School finished runners-up. In junior boys´ section, New Shrine defeated Awareness International Academy (AIA) 50-16.



United Academy win



KATHMANDU: United Academy won the inaugural match in the boys´ section of the 12th Don Bosco Cup Inter-college Basketball Tournament on Monday. United Academy beat Columbus 40-29 while Guinness International won an uncontested victory after getting walkover from Glacier. In girls´ section, Himalayan Whitehouse eased past hosts Kathmandu Don Bosco 31-11 as Minalini Shrestha scored 20 points for the winners. Altogether 18 teams, including six girls´ teams, are vying for the trophy.



Anal Jyoti through semifinal



KATHMANDU: Anal Jyoti School booked their berth in the semifinal of the Sixth SEBS Inter-school Boys and Girls´ Volleyball Tournament in girls´ category. In the group ´B´ match, Anal Jyoti defeated hosts Samakhushi English Boarding School (SEBS) 25-18, 26-24. With the win, Anal Jyoti topped their group where Bijeshwari finished runners-up to reach last four. In boys´ section, SEBS ´A´ and SEBS ´B´, Deep Jyoti, Venus, Angels´ Heart, Apollo and defending champion Newton reached quarterfinals.



Bagmati, Mt Glory in triumph



KATHMANDU: Bagmati, Mount Glory, Edenbridge and Awareness International Academy (AIA) won their respective matches in junior boys´ category of the Fifth Kwiks Greenland Inter-school Basketball Tournament on Monday. Bagmati defeated Gyankunj 20-12, while Mount Glory eased past Gauri Shankar 18-6. Edenbridge struggled to beat Bhadrakali 22-20 as AIA pulled by a narrowest of margins to tally 26-25 against Fluorescent School. In senior boys´ section, Arunodaya beat Ganesh School 40-29 and Mount Glory defeated Fluorescent 36-33.



APF win in tiebreaker



SIMARA: Nepal APF Club came back from a 2-0 deficit to pull off a 3-1 tiebreaker victory over Lalbandi Youth Club, Sarlahi in the ongoing Second Simara Gold Cup here on Monday. Utsav KC put Lalbandi 1-0 ahead in the 39th minute and Kamal Bista made it 2-0 in the 64th minute. However, APF made an impressive comeback through Arjun Subba´s goal in the 74th minute. Newly-married Amir Shrestha, who had his wife cheering him on from the stands, became the hero of the match with his last-minute goal to level the match at 2-2. Shrestha was later adjudged man of the match. Extra time failed to break the deadlock, and APF won 3-1 in the tiebreaker.


Depot win basketball title



DHARAN: Depot Higher Secondary School won the title of the basketball tournament organized by Dharan Municipality on the occasion of its golden jubilee on Monday. Depot registered a hard-fought 49-46 victory over Dharan Higher Secondary School in the final to lift the trophy. Heman Rai contributed the highest 32 points in Depot´s victory. Meanwhile, Bishwaraj Limbu of Public Higher Secondary School won gold in the inter-school road race organized on the occasion.



Likewise, BP Koirala Institute of Health Sciences (BPKIHS) won the inter-college cricket tournament. BPKIHS defeated Niketan Higher Secondary School by nine wickets in the final match held on their home ground. BPKIHS won the toss and opted to field. They restricted Niketan to 64 runs in the allotted 16 overs. In reply, they met the target of 65 runs in 10.4 overs losing one wicket. Abhimanyu Ganguly, who scored an unbeaten 33 runs for BPKIHS, was adjudged the man of the match.



Surya Nepal Central Open kicks off Tuesday



KATHMANDU: Surya Nepal Central Open will tee off on Tuesday at the Gokarna Golf Club. The Central Open is the sixth event of the Surya Nepal Golf Tour 2010-11.

The event will be played over 72 holes from Tuesday to Friday. There will be a cut applied after the completion of the second round (36 holes). Top 21 professional golfers and ties will make it through to the final 36 holes along with six amateurs.



Altogether 25 professional golfers will test their skills for a total prize money of Rs 385,000, while 19 amateurs will compete with the professionals in the tournament. The winner of the event will bag Rs 80,000 while the runner-up will receive Rs 51,000. The top 21 spots and ties will be awarded prize money.



Winner of three events in this season, Shiva Ram Shrestha, current season´s money leader and defending champion Rupak Acharya, last season´s order of merit winner Rabi Khadka along with Sanjay Lama and Sabin Sapkota will be top contenders in the event.
