SPORTS BRIEFS: Five share lead in youth rating chess

KATHMANDU, Oct 8: FIDE Master Manish Hamal, Uttam Raj Thapa, Balaram Napit, Badri Lal Nepali and Binod Gyawali are jointly leading the First National Youth of Nation Rating Chess Tournament with 3 points each after the completion of the second and third round matches held at Khwapring School, Bhaktapur on Friday.



Hamal defeated Roshan Poudel and Hari Chandra Chaulagain in the second and third rounds respectively. Nepal champion Nepali registered victories over Shree Krishna Prajapati and Kamal Shrestha while unrated Rajendra Parajuli put up an impressive performance to beat Bijay Dangol and Hera Kaji Maharjan. Meanwhile, Madan Krishna Kayastha and Rahul Pradhan are in the second spot with 2.5 points each. Other players who have gathered 2 points are Hera Kaji Maharjan, Raju Subedi, Hari Chandra Chaulagain, Umesh Sainju, Laba Kumar Shrestha, Kamal Shrestha, Milan Rokka, Nabin Tandukar and Prajwal Raj Rajopadhyaya.





Thagunna wins badminton title



KATHMANDU, Oct 8: Kanchan Thagunna clinched the title of the Panchakumari Badminton Tournament in men´s singles category, thrashing Rajendra Khadka 15-6, 15-4 on Friday.



Thagunna teamed up with Khadka to win the men´s doubles title also. The duo defeated the pair of Prakash Rai and Dipak Regmi 15-11, 15-17, 15-13.



Meanwhile, Sanjay Shrestha and Ganesh Subba´s pair lifted the title of veterans´ doubles with a 15-11, 15-5 victory over the pair of Sher Bahadur Gurung and Lilendra Shah in the men´s category.





Ruslan Vodka golf on Saturday



KATHMANDU, Oct 8: The Ruslan Vodka Dashain Cup 2010 golf tournament is all set to kick off on Saturday at the Royal Nepal Golf Club, Tilganga. The tournament will be played under the Stableford 7/8th format.



The winner of this tournament will get a round trip ticket of Kathmandu-Bangkok-Kathmandu for two persons while the runner-up will also receive a round trip ticket of Kathmandu-Delhi-Kathmandu for two. More than 85 golfers are expected to participate in the tournament, according to the organizers Asian Distillery Pvt Ltd.



Ruslan Vodka is the main sponsor of the tournament, while Heineken Beer and QFX Cinemas have also supported the event.
