As part of the campaign, Metropolitan Police in Kathmandu, Lalitpur and Bhaktapur will jointly carry out special security patrols. Organizing a press conference at Metropolitan Police Commissioner´s Office, Ranipokhari, Additional Inspector General (AIG) Nawa Raj Dhakal, Metropolitan Police Commissioner said, “We will place special focus on cracking down on crimes like extortion, vandalism, burglaries, looting, assaults and threats with public support.”[break]
“We will first increase the number of security personnel, set up more check posts in the Valley including in areas that are more prone to crime,” AIG Dhakal said. Analyzing the crime patterns in all the three district of the Valley, we have divided the Valley into several categories and will launch operation accordingly, he added.
Every year during festive season police have been conducting special security campaign in the Valley. But this time we will be focus more on the elections, SSP Subodh Ghimire, Chief of Metropolitan Police Range Office, said.
According to police, the campaign will be conducted for one month in the first phase and will be extended on need basis. According to the plan, sniffer dogs will be deployed in sensitive areas, there will be CCTV surveillance of the crowded areas and local gangsters will be kept under special watch.
Police will keep special watch at bus parks and Valley entry points, and conduct "surprise raids" at hotels, lodges, guesthouses and restaurants.
“We will also increase vigilance in and around tourist spots, illegal drug hubs and suspected red light areas,” AIG Dhakal informed.
He also said that police have begun profiling the former convicts and those who have recently been released from prisons.
