Soul ticklers aplenty

KATHMANDU, Oct 27: This week’s top spin is studded with soul-tickling creations from Orianthi, David Archuleta, Sheryl Crow, Akon, Ne-Yo, and Kelly Rowland.

The best of the last few weeks’ releases, “Courage” by Orianthi, is one of the most entertaining secular yet genuine prayers ever; David Archuleta’s “Elevator” brings in a melodious dimension to elevator ride, Sheryl Crow’s “Sign Your Name” brings back blast from the past, Kelly Rowland’s “Rose Colored Glasses” attempts to break norms, Akon’s “Angel” is in praise of his glowing fairy, and so is Ne-Yo’s “One in a Million.”[break]

Starting off with Orianthi’s “Courage,” it’s a prayer without attempting to be religious. It’s the kind of song you listen to and sing until you soak in every syllable of the words in the lyrics. The song portrays ‘Courage’ as an attitude.

Enveloped in positivity such as this, the song is here to stay, not as ‘memory’ but as ‘forever’; a song that’s meant to be covered by young voices in the days to come.

“Elevator” by David Archuleta is another song that arrives with a bang. In terms of music, vocals and lyrics, “Elevator” is subtle and strong. The song isn’t pushy, and allows the audience to go with the flow. Lyrically, I find its strength in the positive energy it keeps rolling just as Orianthi’s “Courage.”

In the track, life is shown as an elevator that sometimes takes us up and at other times tears us down. It gives a message of taking chance, not being afraid to let go; and regardless of what has happened so far, continue to keep the dream alive. I would have the song as one of the best new releases with high prospects for commercial success.

Sheryl Crow revives the blast from the past in “Sign Your Name by singer songwriter Terence Trent D1 Arby. The song is the second single off Sheryl Crow’s tenth studio album, “100 Miles from Memphis.” In the track, Crow’s work is complimented by Justin Timberlake’s background vocals.

While the song has already been covered by a dozen artists, including Michael Bolton and George Michael, Sheryl’s version does add another dimension to the song. The song should be a great hit amongst the present generation.

Akon’s “Angel” is in praise of a lady. Though beauty inspiring poets and musicians isn’t new, Akon has tried his best to ensure his creation has a unique twist. What’s more, the song is equally infectious and enjoyable.

The peppy track that forms the lead single off Akon’s upcoming fourth studio album “Akonic” can be expected to rule the dance floors, clubs and pubs alike.

“One in a Million” by Ne Yo has its theme similar to Akon’s latest. The song is from Ne-Yo’s fourth studio album “Libra Scale” slated for release this November. Despite the similarity of theme, what makes the song different is the singer’s musical presentation.

However, one can sense traces of flavors from “Miss Independent,” the song from his 2008 album, “Year of the Gentleman.” Despite this, the song can be expected to reach the higher rungs of music charts for it has an impeccable ability to not only grab the listener’s attention but hold it for the full length of the song, and then hit the button for replay.

Kelly Rowland has bombarded the music scene with “Rose Colored Glasses” from her upcoming self-titled album. With the song aimed at mainstream pop, the former Destiny’s Child has her dice rolling in the quest to compete with much established artistes, namely Beyonce?

Rowland’s attempt to make a permanent hot niche for herself as a solo artist in the industry is genuine, and “Rose Colored Glasses” could be a breakthrough. Though energetic, the track avoids superficiality, thereby leaving the audience not only swaying but munching on them words as well.

These are the six best releases of the past few weeks you shouldn’t miss. They promise to please every audiophile and give them reason to ponder upon. Music for ears, mind and heart, these are the soul ticklers.
