KATHMANDU, April 23: India’s Ambassador to Nepal, Rakesh Sood, is leaving for New Delhi Thursday afternoon on a “consultation duty”, according to our correspondent Akanshya Shah. [break]

Spokesperson at the Indian Embassy, Tshering W Sherpa, said Ambassador Sood is returning to Kathmandu “tomorrow or the day after”. The Delhi tour of the Indian envoy has come “all of a sudden” by cancelling his routine programs in Kathmandu.

In a media advisory sent on Thursday morning, the embassy had said the ambassador was scheduled to hand over a check of Rs. 166.30 million at 4pm to Water Resources Minister Bishnu Poudel, for the construction of embankments along Bagmati, Kamala, Lalbakeya and Khando rivers. About one and half hours later, the embassy just said “this event has been postponed and the new dates would be intimated subsequently” without giving any reason.

Ambassador Sood had called on Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal for two days in a row (Monday and Tuesday) and President Dr. Ram Baran Yadav on Wednesday about the Maoist-led government´s move to sack chief of army staff, Rookmangud Katawal. Some newspapers claimed on Thursday that the prime minister the and the Indian embassador had a heated exchange.

The embassy declined to give Sood’s itinerary in Delhi.
