KATHMANDU, Jan 18: People from Tamang community are celebrating Sonam Lhosar with fanfare by extending greetings to one another and feasting on traditional cuisines today.
Sonam Lhosar is being celebrated on the first day of the new moon in the month of Magh in the lunar calendar.
According to Manju Shree calender, Tamangs divide their year into 12 cycles, each is given a special name, before the name of animals, former chair of Bauddhanath Area Development Committee Sampurna Bahadur Lama told.
It is stated that the Nepal Tamang Ghedung Association is organizing special programs in Tundikhel today to mark the festival.

President Bhandari extends Sonam Lhosar wishes
Meanwhile, President Bidya Devi Bhandari has extended best wishes to all Tamang sisters and brothers at home and abroad on the occasion of Sonam Lhosar, the greatest festival of the Tamang community.
In the Lhosar greetings delivered today, President Bhandari wished the people from Tamang community for their peace, happiness, prosperity, good health, fraternity and progress on the occasion of the festival.
“May this day inspire all Nepali citizens to maintain fraternity, mutual harmony, tolerance and goodwill and ultimately bring the country to prosperity by promoting cultural diversities and the specialty of the country at global arena,” the President said.
She further has hoped that the festival will inspire all to join hands in the mega campaign of making prosperous Nepal.
