Social Practices Reform Act: Outdated, ignored, and unenforced

There is a law in Nepal that limits weddings to just 51 people and bans fireworks and extravagant decorations. Yet, this law has never been enforced in nearly 50 years of its existence. Yes, the Social Practices (Reform) Act 2033 BS, aimed at curbing wasteful spending on social events, remains a dead letter – completely ignored by both the public and the government. As the culture and society of Nepal have evolved, there are many now calling for its repeal or reform to make it relevant in today’s times.

KATHMANDU, Dec 13: Many may not know that there is a law in Nepal that has been effectively dead since its inception. Despite its enactment, none of its provisions have been implemented due to their impractical nature. This law is the Social Practices (Reform) Act 2033 BS.
