Heavy snowfall was recorded in the upper parts of Solukhumbu district after a long interval on Friday evening, causing a sudden dip in the mercury level. Normal life in Khumjung, Namche and Chaurikharka VDCs of the Khumbu region and areas around Salleri, the district headquarters, has been adversely affected by the snowfall. [break]
The roofs and streets in the areas are covered with thick layer of snow, making it difficult for the locals to conduct their daily chores, informed our Solukhumbu based Republica correspondent. Children and elderly are the worst affected by the biting cold caused by the blizzard. “We are staying indoors lighting fire as it is not possible to go outside,” said Grimi Sherpa, a local of Salleri.
However, the snowfall has brought smile on the faces of tourists who arrived in the upper part of Solukhumbu district. The number of tourists visiting the snow hit areas has increased abruptly. Hordes of Indian tourists from Darjeeling, Kurseong, Mirik and Siliguri are arriving, informed Sherpa.
Meanwhile, the lightning on Friday night has affected the broadcast by local radio stations in the district.
Likewise, various highland areas in the eastern region received heavy snowfall coupled by rainfall on Friday night, informed Ilam based Republica correspondent. With the snowfall in the upper belt of Ilam, Panchthar and Taplegunj districts, the temperature has suddenly fallen, throwing people´s daily lives off kilter, informed locals.
According to Pasangdhawa Sherpa, proprietor of a hotel in the upper belt in Ilam, the district´s landscape is enveloped in snow. Though farmers and wage earners are affected by the snowfall, it has certainly benefited hotel entrepreneurs in the areas.
Similarly, the snowfall near Pauwa Bhanjyang of Panchthar district is creating difficulty in vehicular movements. Many schools in the districts have been closed over the last few days.
