SLRP strike affects life in eastern region

ILAM, March 5: Normal life in nine districts of the eastern part of the country was thrown out of gear on Sunday due to the strike called by Sanghiya Limbuwan Rajya Parisad (SLRP) affiliated to Sanghiya Loktantrik Rastriya Manch.



On the second day of the strike, vehicular movement along the Mechi Highway came to a complete standstill while schools, colleges, marketplaces remained shut. SLRP cadres also vandalized over half a dozen vehicles in Itahari.[break]



SLRP has been demanding the release of its arrested cadres. Police on Friday had arrested five cadres of SLRP from Durdimba of Panchthar for disrupting the ongoing voter registration.



Ilam district chairman of SLRP Dil Prasad Nembang said they have lifted the strike from 5 pm Sunday till 5 am Monday.



Meanwhile, police arrested five banda enforcers on Sunday. Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Bhim Bahadur Dahal said two of them were released after being briefly detained.



Ilam chapter of FNCCI, Hotel Association and transport entrepreneurs have urged SLRP to call off its shutdown.



Meanwhile, Bara district headquarters Kalaiya remained tense after Rastriya Madheshwadi Samajwadi party staged demonstrations protesting the beating up of party leader Pramod Gupta. The protestors have accused the police of beating up Gupta and his aides on Saturday.
