KATHMANDU, July 17: CPN (Maoist Center) has attributed its defeat in the first and second phase of local elections to six factors.
The ruling Maoist Center has won just 84 chairs in rural municipalities and municipalities out of the total 617 local units, with local polls remaining in 127 local units of Province 2. The party had secured victory in 46 units in the first phase polls held in 283 local units and 38 units in the second phase polls held in 334 local units.
In-charge of the all seven provinces of the Maoist Center briefed the party leaders during a meeting on Monday about the poll results and reasons behind their failure to secure victory as expected.
“Failure of the party leadership on management of the party organization has been blamed as the major reason behind the defeat of the party,” in-charge of Province-7 Lekh Raj Bhatta told Republica. He further said that lack of election experience with the leaders, unpreparedness till the last hour, failure to dispatch message of party unity to the local level, weak relation of party leaders with the locals and bribing voters by other parties have been identified as other major reasons behind the Maoist’s failure in the local polls.
Sabitri Kumar Kafle from Province 1, Matrika Yadav from Province 2, Hitman Shakya from Province 3, Dev Gurung from Province 4, Barshaman Pun from Province 5, Shakti Bahadur Basnet from Province 6 and Bhatta from Province 7 had briefed the party leaders during the meeting. Yadav’s report was focused on party’s organizational status and activities in Province 2 for the election preparation.
However, most of the province in-charges claimed that the percentage of voters of the party has increased in all six provinces in comparison to the Constituent Assembly election of 2013.
“The party has secured more votes in all six provinces than in the 2013 CA election, maintained second position in 90 local units and was defeated with less than 500 votes in 12 local units, which is a positive thing,” said Bhatta.
Maoist Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal said that the party failed to sell its agenda to the voters due to inactive party organization and lack of management of the party committees.
“Politics is still revolving around the Maoist agenda till now but we failed to secure expected victory in the election due lack of organizational management and lack of preparation,” a leader quoted Dahal as saying.
