Sirish set the record in men's 200 m breaststroke final shattering nine-year-old record. Sirish clocked 2 minute 42.72 second to break the record set by Alice Shrestha (2 minute 44.67 second) during the 10th South Asian Games (SAG) held in Colombo, Sri Lanka in 2006. Second place finisher, Kiran Karki, of the same team also surpassed the previous record mark clocking 2 minute 44.60 seconds. Suvam Shrestha of KMC School came third. This is the 23rd time that Sirish has set new national record. He holds 10 national record under his belt.
Similarly, Sofia bettered her own record of 29.43 seconds in the heats round of women's 50 m freestyle set during 16th FINA World Championship held earlier this year in Kazan, Russia. She clocked 29.33 seconds in the heats but finished the final clocking 29.45 seconds on Thursday.
Besides setting the national record, Sirish also won seven gold medals on the opening day. He claimed gold in 400 m freestyle, 200 m individual medley, 200 m butterfly, 100 m backstroke, 100 m and 50 m freestyle. Kiran, meanwhile, secured gold in 50 m breast stroke.
Besides, setting national record in the heats of 50 m freestyle, Sofia earned two other golds in 200 m freestyle and 50 m backstroke.
Rashika Paudel (3 minute 24.04 seconds) in women's 200 m backstroke, Oshin Bharati (1 minute 22 seconds) in 100 m butterfly, Sonira Bista (1 minute 28.10 seconds) in 100 m breaststroke also secured golds medals.
