The transformer stopped functioning on Tuesday, according to Mahendra Yadav, supervisor of the sub-station. He added that the transformer stopped operating after being unable to handle electricity load, owing to a rise in power theft from hooking for lighting and irrigation purposes.
The blackout has affected 24,000 customers, apart from 200 small and medium industries. It has also affected Sharada distillery and Maruti Cement Udyog.
Nepal Electricity Authority said it will take at least a month to repair the transformer.
