KATHMANDU, Aug 1: Service-seekers are now allowed to put on vermillion powder (sindoor), tika, and Nepali cap while taking photographs for National Identity Cards, following the abolition of the previous ban imposed on these items.

In a notice issued on Thursday, the government said that the national identity card is now allowed to have photos of citizens wearing attires reflecting their religious, cultural and ethnic identity. Issuing a notice, the Department of National Identity Card and Registration under the Ministry of Home Affairs stated that vermillion, tika, traditional necklaces and caps that reflect cultural and ethnic identity of a person will be allowed on photographs.

The Department has further issued a four-point directive to its subordinate offices after the government was severely criticized for imposing a ban on the Nepali cap, vermillion powder, traditional necklaces and tika while taking photos for the national identity card.

The Department has also instructed all the district administration offices, area administration offices, and national identity card units to provide simpler and more effective services to citizens seeking a national identity card.

According to the Department, a decision has been made to enhance the service delivery of national identity cards, making it easier and more effective. Furthermore, this decision will eliminate confusion regarding biometrics and the required documents for obtaining the national identity card.
