KATHMANDU, July 12: The notion of being born "with a silver spoon in one´s mouth" has more to do with the socioeconomic condition of the family who could afford the silver spoon. This old idea is a testament to the protective benefits of silver. [break]

´Because modern chemistry wasn´t available, earlier generations used silver containers or utensils to reap the benefits of silver. The fact that a mere contact with silver was enough to disinfect speaks volumes of silver´s wonderful properties´ says Tej Ratna Shakya of Tejmin Jewelry.

´This must be the secret reason why the upper class people drank from silver cups and ate with silver utensils´, added Shakya. Silver products have traditionally been used for their cleansing benefits. Silver is the cool material to take on more traditional forms that blend elegance with warmth and approachability. How fortuitous for silver to be attractive not only for its aesthetic qualities, but its therapeutic qualities as well. Unfortunately, though this product has the potential to replace so many commercial products now available and in use throughout our planet, they are confined to just few groups of people for certain purpose.

Confined may be the use of silver, this metal has the alluring factor that has been able to pull even the middle-goers. Since silver can be shaped into a miniature jewelry to a gigantic utensil the magic has not yet stopped. ´With the increment in the purchasing power of the people, the popularity of silver utensils is in the increasing trend´, says Shakya.

Tejmin Jewelry at New Road is one such destination that still awakens the magic of the metal. Be it a dinner set, lamp, candle stand, lipstick stand or the traditional silver vanity box all can be either purchased ready made or can be ordered at the shop. The prices of the items made from this metal however depend upon the current price of silver per tola and the total weight of the utensil. The wage involved for a plain utensil without any carvings is around Rs 50-Rs 55 per tola. The cost is added up if the utensils are made with carvings on them. To this cost, the manufacturing cost is added which determine the overall cost of the silver wares.

Shakya however warns the consumers to trade with only the experienced and well established jewelers. Buying anywhere will just add up to high chances of the metal being fake.
