Khan, an Indian national, was arrested on the basis of Siba´s statement recorded by police, in which the 19-year-old accused him of dousing her with petrol and setting her on fire. He paid Rs 2,500 in bail money. [break]
However, Siba´s mother Hasina Hasami and brother Rihan Ahamad Hasami aka Suddu have been remanded in judicial custody pending further investigation of claims by locals that the family was involvement in the murder.
Locals of Gulariya-8 had organized protests to pressure the police and administration, claiming the family´s involvement in Siba´s murder and protesting Khan´s innocence.
The locals had registered their complaint categorically naming Siba´s family members in the murder, along with a recording of a telephone conversation. The complaint names Siba´s mother Hasiana and brothers Rijwan and Rihan as the murderers. Rijwan has been on the lam since the complaint was registered.
In the telephone recording, said to be of a call between Siba and Khan and made available to the police, Siba is heard entreating Khan to marry her and take her away from her pestering parents. Many locals have come to testify to Khan´s innocence.
Siba had sustained 90 percent burn injuries in the incident on December 7 and she died while undergoing treatment at Bir Hospital in Kathmandu on December 13.
