CHITWAN, May 17: Life in Chitwan has been further affected due to the general strike enforced by two different ethnic organizations on Thursday.

A normal life here had already been affected due to the shutdown enforced by the Tharu United Struggle Committee since the last four days and the shutdown today will only add to the difficulty.

The Tharu United Struggle Committee has been waging protest movement calling for establishment of a separate Tharuhat province in the new federal set-up.

The indefinite general strike today has been enforced by the Joint Struggle Committee for National Integrity and Ethnic Goodwill.

Meanwhile, the protesting ethnic organizations and the local administration held talks on Wednesday evening for making the shutdown peaceful. In the talks, the general strike organizers have agreed to conduct their protest programmes in a peaceful manner and not to hold street demonstrations.

Vehicles operating on the long and short routes have stayed off the roads due to the banda. Schools in the district are already closed for 15 days. Industries, business establishments and the market are also closed.
