Shrestha defends Eastern Open title

DHARAN, Dec 30: Nepal No 1 pro Shiva Ram Shrestha defended the title of the Surya Nepal Eastern Open, the eighth event under the Surya Nepal Golf Tour 2011-12, at the Nirvana Country Club Golf and Health Resort in Dharan on Friday.



The Royal Nepal Golf Club (RNGC) pro carded five-over 75 on the final day for a total of five-over 215. However, he was able to defend the title with the score.[break]



Ramesh Adhikari and Rabi Khadka remained two-stroke behind Shrestha. Adhikari shot three-over 73, while Khadka carded one-over 71 to share the second position at seven-over 217.



Shrestha earned Rs 80,000, while Adhikari and Khadka bagged Rs 43,500 each.



Shrestha, who began the day with four strokes lead over Adhikari and Tham Bahadur Rai, shot eight bogeys and a double bogey against five birdies in his final round score of five-over 75.



Shrestha was happy to win the title but expressed dissatisfaction over his final round performance. “I was expecting to win the title with good score but I played horrible today (Friday),” said Shrestha. “Over all it was horrible. Drive shots, putting, everything went wrong,” he said.



Local pros Tham Bahadur Rai and Sabin Sapkota were tied for the fourth position at 218. The duo received Rs 29,600 each. Rai shot four-over 74 while the joint leader of the first round Sapkota played a round of three-over 73 on the final day.



Surya Prasad Sharma finished sixth with the score of 219 after the final day round of four-over 74. He earned Rs 24,000. Sanjay Lama along with Thapa brothers of Deepak and Ram were tied for seventh position with the total score of 220. The trio received Rs 19,000 apiece.



Deepak Neupane (76) and Umesh Nagarkoti (70) tied for 10th position at 221.



In Amateur section, the product of Surya Nepal NGA Junior Golf Program, Dinesh Prajapati registered a two-stroke victory over Bikash Bogati. Prajapati, who had a six-shot lead going into the final round, shot 11-over 81 for a total of 228, while Bikash played a round of 76.



President of Nepal Professional Golfers Association (NPGA) Rabindra Man Shrestha, Chairman of Nirvana Country Club Golf and Health Resort Shashi Ram Bhandari and Executive Director Kalpana Bhandari handed over the prizes to the winners of the 54-hole tournament organized by the NPGA under the sponsorship of Surya Nepal Pvt Ltd.



The event will end on Saturday with the Pro-Am event that will be participated by 15 pros and 45 amateurs.
