Sherpa wins Ballantine's golf

KATHMANDU, Oct 5: Babu Sherpa won the Ballantine´s Open Golf Tournament at Gokarna Golf Club, Kathmandu on Saturday. Sherpa, a 13-handicap player, garnered a total of 42 points with 23 on the front nine and 19 on the back nine during the event played in stableford 3/4 handicap format.



Sherpa received Callaway Golf Watch and gift hamper from Ballantine´s Whisky.[break]



American Brian Fawcett, a 10-handicap player, produced a card of 39 stableford points to finish runner-up. Tashi Ghale, who scored one-under gross, took the best gross award with 39 nett points. Tashi Tshiring finished second in best gross with a score of two-over.

Bhairaja Pandey emerged winner in the senior section with 33 stableford points. In the women´s section, Korean U Jin Kwan scored 28 points to finish ahead of Rekha Ghimire, who scored 27 points.



Ghale also won the award for most birdies with five birdies. Tshiring won the longest drive award and Bishwa Bam Malla got the closest to the pin award.

Korean YD Kwon made a hole in one on the par-3 10th hole and received a special prize. Altogether 78 golfers competed in the event.

Country head of Pernod Ricard, Ravinder Saini; President of Gokarna Golf Club, Suhrid Ghimire; and Vice-president of Gokarna Forest Resort, Dorjee Sherpa, gave away the prizes to the winners.



Nepal meets India today




KATHMANDU (REPUBLICA): Nepal will take on India on Sunday in its second match of the Group A qualifiers for the AFC U-19 Championship being held at the Al Arabia stadium in Doha, Qatar.



Nepal and India both lost their first matches on Friday. Nepal was defeated 2-1 by Turkmenistan and India lost 2-0 against Qatar.

Nepal will be without its defender Bivek Pratap Panta as he was sent off in the first match against Turkmenistan. The Nepali team is scheduled to play against Uzbekistan on Tuesday and host Qatar on Thursday.

The winners of all nine groups and the best six runners-up will join host Myanmar in the finals of the competition scheduled for October 2014.



Lala, Karki win Flex badminton



KATHMANDU (REPUBLICA): The pair of Bhaskar Singh Lala and Rajesh Karki won the Fifth Flex Badminton Championship in the capital on Saturday. Lala and Karki defeated the pair of Kuldip Bista and Kabita Bista 19-21, 21-13, 21-10 in the final of the tournament, which only included doubles competition.



The event is organized for the members of Flex Fitness Center every year on the occasion Dashain. The winners were awarded by President of Flex Fitness Center Sudarshan Karki, Nepal Badminton Association President Ramesh Kumar Shrestha, and former president Prakash Bahadur Shahi, among others.
