KATHMANDU, July 14: The government has decided to increase senior citizen allowance from Rs 500 to Rs 1000 from the new fiscal year.

Reading out the budget for the fiscal year 2015/16 on Tuesday, Finance Minister Ram Sharan Mahat said the government will provide Rs 500 as senior citizen allowance and Rs 500 as medical expenses to senior citizens above 70 years from the new fiscal year.

He said 912,764 senior citizens above 70 years will directly benefit from the new scheme. He said the allowance will be provided to senior citizens through the banking system.

However, senior citizens at Minbhawan have been protesting for two years demanding that the senior citizen allowance be provided to all citizens above 65 years and allowance be increased to Rs 3,000 on monthly basis.
