MAHOTTARI, June 20: The security situation in Mahottari district has been worsening continuously for the past few months. The local police have failed to control grave crimes like murder, rape and arson which have been increasing at an alarming rate. The worrying increase in such crimes has been a great threat to the residents of the district, according to security experts.

According to Ajay Shah, a representative of Insec, Mahottari, the increasing cases of crime have raised serious questions on the security system of the district. On June 17, Najam Nadaf, a 22-year old youth was brutally murdered. Just a week ago of his murder, a 21-year old girl of Aurahi-2, Phulwariya, was gang raped. These two incidents have created terror in the minds of the locals. Even after a week of the Aurahi gang rape, police have not been able to nab the culprits.

It has been about two months that the locals of Mahottari have been continuously hearing about such cases. Even the records of Mahottari Police show that the number of social crimes has been rising in the district. More than half a dozen such cases have been filed in the last two months but police have not yet been able to book anyone. “The district has been terrorized by a series of felonies in recent times but I don't know what the Mahottari Police has been doing to control them,” said Insec representative Shah.

According to Shah, the government has failed to fulfill its responsibility of providing security to its citizens in Mahottari. “The government has been unable to make Mahottari residents feel safe,” said Shah.

In Mahottari, as many as four people were murdered in the last two months. On June 13, a 32-year old man was murdered and thrown in a stream at Bhangaha Sitapur Rural Municipality-4.

Similarly, the dead body of a 28-year old youth was recovered from Rato Khola Bridge in Jaleshwor Municipality-3. The dead body is yet to be identified. Likewise, on May 2, Shila Devi Das, the 35-year old wife of Laxman Das of Bhangaha Sitapur Rural Municipality-9, Pokhari Tole, was murdered and buried in a field behind her own house.

On April 17, 28-year old Ramaumed Yadav of Aurahi Rural Municipality-3 was found dead at his own home. But the district police have been unable to make any progress in any of these cases.

Even though the police claim that they are investigating these cases, the locals say that's a hollow claim. According to some locals, political conflicts, demonstrations, rallies and other violent protests staged by various political parties are one of the reasons behind the deteriorating security situation in the district.

While security has been tightened in other districts due to the elections, it's just the opposite in Mahottari, say the locals.
