GORKHA, May 19: Amrit Bahadur Baga, a Nepal Army soldier, of Pandrung VDC-2 of Gorkha district lost home to the devastating April 25 earthquake. Immediately after the quake, he wanted to visit his home and learn about the condition of his family members.

"Although I was very worried about my family, I was deployed in Barpak, the epicenter of the earthquake, for rescue operation after the deadly quake," he shared.

Amrit's family has been living under a tarpaulin shed after their house was destroyed in the quake. He, however, said, "After I observed the situation in Barpak, I felt like everyone there is my family. Three weeks in the rescue mission passed so fast." He was involved in rescue operation since April 26. He is, however, still unsure when he will be allowed to visit his family members.Armed Police Force constable Krishna Shrestha has been guarding relief materials and demolishing dangerous structures in the district headquarters. His home, which is 25 kilometers from the district headquarters, has been completely destroyed in the earthquake. But he too has not been able to meet his family members after the disaster.

"Our duty requires us to serve people, not just our family. We feel honored to be able to serve Nepalis in need," he said.

Bom Bahadur Bohara, a Nepal Police constable, injured his arm when the police post of Barpak collapsed in the quake. However, he has been actively participating in rescue operation after receiving treatment. Four others were also injured in the same police post. However, all of them are serving the quake victims far from their families. "We worry more about the country," said one of the constables.

Of the total 41 police posts in the district, 31 of them have been damaged in the quake.

According to Inspector Deepak Shrestha, 15 of the police posts have been destroyed while 10 others are partially damaged.

"Police personnel have been deployed for rescue and relief operation. Although we are serving the Nepalis in need, out condition is no better as we have also been living in temporary shelters," said police constable Homnath Adhikari. At present, 634 police have been deployed in Gorkha.

The quake has destroyed the homes of around 125 police personnel. They are, however, tirelessly carrying out rescue and relief operation, said DSP Kumar Shrestha.
