KATHMANDU, July 31: The government on Friday decided to introduce special security package for VDC secretaries. The Ministry of Home Affairs has also decided to direct district security chiefs to take effective measures for the security of VDC secretaries.

A meeting held at the Ministry of Home Affairs and attended by Home Secretary Govinda Kusum and MoLD Secretary Krishna Gyawali, among others, also decided not to accept the resignation of the VDC secretaries. [break]

Over 1,500 VDC secretaries from 27 districts had resigned en mass recently citing security threats from Samyukta Jatiya Mukti Morcha -- a little known outfit.

The outfit reportedly has warned the VDC secretaries to either quit their job or face the consequences.

Of the total 3,915, nearly 2,100 VDCs have been badly affected due to absence of VDC secretaries.

The MoLD, had earlier urged home ministry to immediately introduce security package for VDC secretaries.

As per the decision, the District Police Office would set up a wing led by Police Inspector to take up complaints and take action against complaints filed by VDC secretaries.

According to MoLD, nearly 600 posts of VDC secretaries have been lying vacant.

VDC secretaries, especially from seven districts of Tarai -- Parsa, Bara, Rautahat, Sarlahi, Dhanusha, Mahottari, Saptari and Siraha -- have been compelled to quit due to threats from various other outfits.
