On Thursday, police had charged batons and fired tear gas shells to disperse agitating teachers who had padlocked the District Education Office as part of their nationwide protest. Five policemen and seven teachers had been injured in the ensuing clashes. They are currently undergoing treatment. [break]
“We will announce stronger protests if the police does not refrain from brutally attacking us,” said Biman Singh Khadka, Udayapur chapter president of RQTSC. Relief quota teachers are on warpath demanding equal salaries and privileges on par with government teachers for the past few days.
Relief quota teachers claim they have not received salaries on par with government teachers though Finance Minister Surendra Pande had made such a pledge during the last budget speech.
According to Udayapur District Education Officer (DEO) Hira Prasad Dhakal, the government has not allocated enough funds for provide increased salaries.
Meanwhile, all administrative works in District Education Office of Udayapur has come to a complete halt since the past three days after RQTSC agitators padlocked its main gates. “We are not allowed to enter the office,” DEO Dhakal complained. “A lot of works have piled up as it is the last month of the fiscal.”
