The second day of talks among the government, forum and Nepal Teachers Union (NTU) ended the strike as well as other strikes planned by the NTU. The decision came after both sides agreed to resume talks from Friday for point-wise negotiations on the demands raised by forum and NTU. [break]
The talks were attended by two ministers Minendra Rijal (Culture and State Restructuring) and Rakam Chemjong (Peace and Reconstruction). The government had formed a three-minister panel with Minister for Education Ramchandra Kushbaha as the coordinator. But Kishbaha currently on a visit to Parsa district was absent at the talks.
The forum announced the strike demanding implementation of agreements reached with the previous government that included permanent status for temporary school teachers and guarantee of salary and perks for private school teachers on par with the government scale.
According to the Ministry of Education, some 6.5 million students across the country were affected by the school closure. The strike affected some 2,500 schools in Kathmandu Valley alone.
