School closure affecting students’ studies

GORKHA, May 23: At nearly nine in the morning, Sujata Rana Magar,16, and her elder sister, Sunita, of Gorkha municipality were busy fetching mud to rebuild their house, which was destroyed in the April 25 earthquake.

Though their school remains closed, they do not intend to go to school even it reopens soon as their foremost concern is to rebuild their house.


Moreover, Shree Ratna Rajya Laxmi Secondary School at Simalgairi village, where these children go to study, is in a vulnerable condition. One of the three school buildings has collapsed, while the other two buildings have been badly damged.




“I miss going to school. I always liked getting up in the morning and helping my parents in do household chores before heading for school. It always felt good to learn new things from our teachers,”said Sujata, a sixth grader.

Sunita, however, seemed relaxed as she recently appeared in the School Leaving Certificate (SLC) examinations. She is one of the few girls from her community who has reached so far as to appear in the SLC examinations.  For almost a month now, both these girls have been taking shelter in a tent along with their parents near their collapsed house.



Dilip Malbul, 18, another students was seen playing in front of his neighbor’s house. As his school remains closed, he spends most of his time playing with friends. However, he wishes to meet the rest of his friends at school. “I wonder when will the school will reopen. I miss math’s class. It is my favorite subject,” said Malbul.
