High-profile corruption cases pending at Supreme Court for two...
Manandhar filed a writ petition in the SC against the government's decision to grant the amnesty of life imprisonment in criminal cases. On the recommendation of the government, President Poudel had pardoned Dhakal, who was serving life imprisonment in the case of murder.
Regal fatally attacked Chetan on July 13, 2015, in Nepalgunj. In May 2019, the Banke District Court found him guilty and subsequently sentenced him to life imprisonment.
Ten others involved in the incident were also convicted, with prison terms ranging from three to 10 years, based on their level of involvement.
Prior to the implementation of the National Civil Code, the SC had ruled that, in accordance with previous prison regulations, a person demonstrating good behavior and serving 40 percent of their prison sentence should be eligible for exemption from imprisonment. The government asserts that Regal's imprisonment was based on these prior decisions.
