KATHMANDU, July 7: Acting on a writ petition, the Supreme Court on Tuesday ordered the National Human Rights Commission to stop the process of making its temporary staffs permanent till it gives its final verdict on the case. Under pressure from 74 temporary staff, the commission had forwarded the process by amending its regulations unilaterally despite objection from the Public Service Commission (PSC) and the Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers (PMO).

The temporary staffs were hired for specific donor-funded projects at the NHRC but were appointed at the national human rights watchdog in official positions on contract basis without meeting existing standards of examinations when the projects phased out. The appointment in official positions of these staffers were mired by irregularities. The Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority has already questioned the appointments at the NHRC on contract basis.
