KATHMANDU, May 6: The Supreme Court on Wednesday stayed a decision of the Election Commission (EC) to recognize Nepal Sadbhavana Party-Anandidevi (NSP-A) faction led by former minister Shyam Sundar Gupta as the legitimate NSP-A.
In March, the EC had recognized the Gupta-led faction as official NSP-A, which prompted other factions led by Khusi Lal Mandal and Sarita Giri to move the Supreme Court.
Taking up separate writ petitions filed by Mandal and Giri, Justices Ram Prasad Shrestha and Mohan Prakash Sitoula ordered the EC not to implement its decision till the court gives its final verdict on the controversy. The party has been facing a long-running intra-party conflict, with each faction trying to capture the party leadership. In this bid, each faction had even involved in hiding its chiarperson Anandi Devi Singh last year. Now, the Mandal-faction is led by Singh while another faction has Giri as its chairperson. The third faction is led by Gupta.
The fresh controversy landed in the court in March after the Election Commission recognized the Gupta faction as official NSP-A.
