KATHMANDU, April 21: The Supreme Court (SC) on Sunday stayed Tribhuvan University (TU)´s recent decision to bar student leaders above the age of 28 from contesting free student union (FSU) elections.

A single bench of Justice Gyanendra Bahadur Karki issued the interim order in response to a writ petition filed by various student leaders on Thursday.[break]

Student leaders from 14 campuses, including Nepal Law Campus, Padma Kanya Campus and Tri-Chandra Campus had filed at the SC arguing that the TU´s decision does not have any legal ground.

They had claimed that the age limit for students contesting student union election should be removed as there is no age bar for continuing one´s studies.

A meeting of the TU senate on April 5 had decided to amend the provision that allowed candidates to contest elections, irrespective of their age.

Petitioners had made Chairman of Interim Election Council Khil Raj Regmi as the defendant in the writ petition.
