KATHMANDU, Jan 7: The Supreme Court (SC) has issued an order on Monday in the name of Nepal Telecom not to allow unauthorized access to personal information.

Releasing the full text of the verdict of the division bench of the Justices Dr Nahakul Subedi and Mahesh Sharma of September 10, 2024, the SC on Monday ordered the telecom not to allow access to such information as people have rights to privacy, personal freedom and dignified life.

The full text reads, "Ensure the protection of such fundamental rights even in procurement and installation of billing system as well as ensure that there will be no conflict of interest during the procurement process."

It is mentioned that the supplier would have access to the information and data on the mobile phones of customers of Nepal Telecom in the billing system while purchasing it through tender and there is a condition that sensitive and confidential information of citizens would be at risk from this.

Nepal Telecom had announced a tender notice on March 31, 2024 to install the 'CRTB' system by displacing the integrated billing system.

Rita Karki had filed a petition at the SC, stating that installing the 'CRTB' system was not a new one, it was costly and customers' privacy could be compromised and Nepal Telecom might face financial loss.
