To mark this year´s environment day, The Bhatbhateni Group, School of Arts, Kathmandu University (SoAKU) and Nepal Republic Media have begun a campaign to reduce the use of plastic bags at the Bhatbhateni Supermarket.
The campaign will begin Saturday, June 13 with a daylong awareness program at the Bhatbhateni Supermarket to be conducted by the SoAKU students. Once the program begins, Bhatbhateni Supermarket will start charging half its cost price for the plastic bags used by their customers (Re 1), at the same time they will also begin introducing reusable cloth shopping bags on half its cost price (Rs 15).
"We are going to charge Re 1 per plastic bag and create a fund for a greenery project on the road connecting Shital Niwas and Naxal Balmandir," said Min Bahadur Gurung, proprietor of Bhatbhateni Group.
The Supermarket will further add 25 per cent of the raised amount on the fund. At the same time the Supermarket will deposit Rs 5 from each cloth bag sold to the SOAKU environmental fund.
At a press meet organized at the Supermarket, Umesh Mainali, Secretary of Environment, Shova Gyawali, Director of Nepal Republic Media and Min Bahadur Gurung signed a memorandum of understanding, expressing their commitment to carry ahead the pro-environmental project.
