Save the children and their rights

All the local and central-level initiatives taken to eradicate child exploitation and to ensure their rights have not been much efficient in Nepal due to multiple reasons that the country is facing in recent times.[break]

Considering such realities, the country head office of Save the Children in Nepal has broadened its horizons to disseminate its core message to larger masses by organizing a concert called “Rights Rock” where celebrated music celebrities of Nepal will be participating for the cause.

The concert commences today at Jawlakhel Ground from 3:30 p.m. onwards. In addition, the event is being organized to mark the 20th anniversary of United Nation Convention on Rights of Child, which started in 1989 and Nepal signed in 1992.

Along with the Youth Brand Ambassador of Save the Children, the 1974 AD band, prominent singers of Nepal like Kunti Moktan, Nima Rumba, Sugam Pokharel, and Robin Tamang have joined their hands to make this event grand. They are all set to set the Jawlakhel ground on fire during the mega concert this afternoon.

Having tried several times to eliminate exploitation and abuse to children through bureaucratic means, Save the Children has often been disappointed by the least support it has been receiving from the government bodies. Perhaps the organizers are pretty hopeful that through this concert they will directly interact with people en masse and can advocate their prime objectives to make children free from any sort of abuses and exploitations.

Another prime objective of the concert is to push hard the issue that defines the age of children.

Sudarshan Shrestha, spokesperson of Save the Children made it clear: “In Nepal, people regard 0 to 16 as the age that defines the childhood. Elsewhere it is 0 to 18. We’re trying to advocate and push hard to follow the global system of looking at the age of children..

“Another major issue that we want to raise through this concert is how children have been exploited and are caught for political purposes. We had strictly restrained political parties from using children for their motives. They replied that they will not “misuse” them. Involving them itself is misusing,” Shrestha added.

Apart from this free concert at the Jawlakhel Ground, Save the Children will also be having various programs at its regional offices outside Kathmandu,, but in smaller scales.
